Indian head massage is based on the Ayurvedic system of healing which has been practiced in India for more than a thousand years. Traditionally it provided Indian families with relaxation and healing on a daily basis, as well as playing a part in rituals such as weddings and births.
As practiced in Western society, Indian head massage is a wonderfully simple and relaxing half-hour treatment. It is carried out in a massage chair through clothing and does not involve administration of any massage oils. As such it can be carried out in a greater variety of locations and some companies are known to provide Indian head massage for their employees at work as a benefit to improve relaxation and even productivity.
Indian head massage aims to release the stress that commonly builds up in tissues, muscles and joints of the shoulders, neck, head and face. If time is of the essence but you would like to put the world on hold for a short period, this is the massage for you!
You are fully clothed and seated on a chair throughout the duration of the treatment. Different movements are used by the practitioner including kneading, rolling and soothing movements over the neck, shoulder and scalp areas. In addition, pressure points on the face are gently stimulated. The session usually lasts 30 minutes in total.
Following a treatment some clients experience tiredness, dizziness, an increased desire to urinate (as the body eliminates toxins and waste materials) or aching muscles. All of these side effects usually last for no more than a few hours, after which clients generally experience increased energy and alertness. Indian head massage is particularly good for reducing the effects of stress and tension epilepsy. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours before the treatment.
Indian head massage is great for de-stressing and calming, leaving you feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate. It helps increase joint mobility and flexibility in the neck and shoulders, improves blood circulation and lymphatic flow, frees knots of muscular tension, relaxes connective tissue, and aids in the elimination of accumulated toxins and waste products.
Indian head massage is also great at events, like charity days and open evenings (see picture) as shorter sessions can be offered and individuals can enjoy a taste of this wonderful therapy.
